Spreading Warmth & Hope in Sudan
The crisis in Sudan continues to grow with devastating impacts on millions of lives. The ongoing conflict has displaced over 5.4 million people, leaving families vulnerable to hunger, cold, and disease. As a part of the global community, it is our responsibility to not only understand the challenges these families face but also to extend our efforts to provide relief. The Human Development Fund (HDF) is on the ground and we are committed to bringing hope, support and warmth this winter to the people of Sudan during their time of need.
The Crisis in Sudan: A Humanitarian Emergency
Sudan is struggling with one of the most severe humanitarian crises in recent history. In Kassala State, shelters are overcrowded, exposing families to harsh winter conditions without adequate protection. The drop in temperatures brings life-threatening risks, especially to children and the elderly. Food insecurity affects over 15 million people and access to clean water remains a daily struggle for countless displaced families. The magnitude of the crisis demands immediate and sustained action.
HDF’s Initiatives
HDF has stepped in to give essential resources and support to displaced families in Sudan. With a focus on dignity and sustainability, our initiatives address the urgent needs of shelter, food, clean water and winter warmth.
Food Basket Distribution
Our food basket project has provided vital nutrition to families across three shelter centers:
- Umm Roman Model School: 67 families, 358 individuals (with additional support for 7 families)
- Al-Fayhaa School: 35 families, 110 individuals (with additional support for 6 families)
- Al-Taka Girls’ Secondary School: 40 families, 184 individuals (with additional support for 6 families)
Each basket contains essentials such as flour, rice, oil, and lentils, ensuring families have the nourishment they need to survive.
Winter Blanket Distribution
As temperatures drop, our Winter Warmth Mission has distributed 635 blankets to families at Umm Roman Model School:
- 375 blankets weighing 5 kg
- 260 blankets weighing 3 kg
These blankets provide much-needed warmth and protection from the cold for families living in makeshift shelters.
Clean Water Initiatives
To address the pressing issue of water scarcity, we have delivered truckloads of clean water to Kassala shelters. Each truckload, containing 5 cubic meters of water, provides safe and potable drinking water to displaced families, reducing the risk of waterborne illnesses.
Shelter Tents for Kassala
We have distributed 230 durable tents, each costing $550, to give displaced families safety and hope for a better tomorrow. These tents are a lifeline, offering protection from the elements and a sense of stability amidst uncertainty.
Emergency Health Support
Health crises are exacerbated during conflicts and harsh winters. By the grace of Allah, we were able to:
- Emergency health kits for $65 each, addressing basic medical needs
- Immunization and nutritional support for children at just $35 per child, ensuring a healthier future for the next generation
What does a tangible impact look like?
All of those efforts were able to bring measurable relief to Sudan’s most vulnerable families and communities at large. Here’s what we’ve achieved so far:
- 230 families housed in durable tents.
- 150 food baskets distributed, feeding hundreds of individuals.
- 635 winter blankets for warmth and comfort.
- Truckloads of clean water delivered to Kassala shelters.
- Emergency health kits and child immunizations saving lives and safeguarding futures.
