More Than Aid: Restoring Dignity and Hope
Gaza is experiencing an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe. Since the end of the last ceasefire, nearly the entire population—over two million people—faces extreme danger, hunger, and displacement. Israeli military operations and a near-total blockade have devastated basic services and infrastructure, leaving more than 56,000 Palestinians dead and over 132,000 injured since October 2023.
Current Situation:
- Aid Access Severely Restricted: Israel has replaced the previous network of 400 aid distribution points with just four military-controlled sites. This has forced civilians to risk their lives—facing gunfire and mass casualties—just to access food. In the past month alone, over 500 people have been killed and almost 4,000 injured trying to reach these sites.
- Collapse of Essential Services: Fuel is almost gone, shutting down bakeries, water systems, ambulances, and hospitals. Many families now shelter under plastic sheets or makeshift tents, with no clean water, electricity, or sanitation.
- Widespread Hunger and Malnutrition: Famine-like conditions are widespread. Many families are too weak to compete for food, and children are dying from starvation as supplies like baby formula have run out.
- Healthcare System in Ruins: Most hospitals are only partially functional, overwhelmed, and lacking supplies. People injured while seeking aid often die without medical care.
- Mass Displacement: Over 1.9 million people have been displaced. About 82% of Gaza is now considered a militarized zone or under displacement orders.
Humanitarian Response:
- The UN and most international NGOs have been sidelined by the new Israeli/US aid mechanism, which is widely criticized as unsafe and inadequate.
- Experienced humanitarian agencies are ready to scale up relief but are blocked by the ongoing restrictions and security risks.
- The Red Cross and other organizations continue to call for an immediate and sustained ceasefire, full humanitarian access, and the restoration of UN-led aid delivery.
