Crisis Amid Development

Kenya, a diverse and vibrant country in East Africa, faces a range of humanitarian challenges, including periodic droughts, floods, and economic inequalities. While Kenya has made significant strides in development, certain regions continue to experience high levels of poverty, food insecurity, and inadequate access to basic services. The presence of refugees from neighboring countries also places additional pressure on already strained resources.

Situation On The Ground

The people of Kenya are facing:

Humanitarian Needs: Over 4.3 million people, including 2.1 million children, require humanitarian assistance and protection services in Kenya. Prolonged droughts and recurrent floods have led to displacement and loss of livelihoods, especially in arid and semi-arid regions.

Food Insecurity: Approximately 3.4 million people are facing acute food insecurity. The agricultural sector, which is a critical source of livelihood for many, has been severely affected by climate shocks, leading to widespread hunger and malnutrition.

Healthcare: Kenya’s healthcare system, while improving, remains under strain, particularly in rural areas. Many health facilities lack essential supplies and personnel. Access to healthcare is a significant challenge, with maternal and child health services being particularly under-resourced.

Water and Sanitation: Around 10 million people lack access to safe drinking water, and 16 million lack adequate sanitation facilities. The destruction of water infrastructure and the impacts of climate change have exacerbated the water crisis, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases and poor hygiene practices.

Economic Impact: The economic challenges in Kenya are pronounced, with over 36% of the population living below the poverty line. Unemployment rates are high, especially among the youth, and economic disparities are stark between urban and rural areas. The economic pressures are further heightened by the influx of refugees, particularly in the northern regions.

Our Response

HDF is committed to providing comprehensive support to the people of Kenya. Our efforts focus on:

Healthcare Services: Reinforcing healthcare facilities with essential medical supplies and personnel, and implementing health programs to improve access to quality healthcare services, particularly for mothers and children.

Food Assistance: Distributing food supplies to families facing food insecurity and supporting sustainable agricultural practices to improve food production and resilience.

Education: Supporting educational programs for children and youth, providing school supplies, and enhancing access to quality education, especially in underserved areas.

Water and Sanitation: Rehabilitating water infrastructure, ensuring access to clean drinking water, and promoting good hygiene practices to reduce the spread of waterborne diseases.

They are designed for vulnerable communities in arid and semi-arid regions, as well as areas affected by polluted water sources. Each well can be equipped with hand pumps or solar-powered systems. They sustainably serve around 150 households daily, delivering essential access to clean water, improving health, and strengthening community resilience.

Kenya Semi Borehole

Provide safe and accessible water in Kenya through semi-borehole wells. These wells are mechanically drilled to depths of 100–160 feet, allowing access to semi-confined aquifers that provide more reliable and cleaner water than shallow sources. They are designed for vulnerable communities in arid and semi-arid regions, where water scarcity is severe, and surface sources are limited. Each well can be equipped with a hand pump or solar-powered system and can sustainably serve around 300 households daily, ensuring consistent access to clean water, improving health, and strengthening long-term community resilience.

Kenya Borehole

Provide safe and reliable water in Kenya through borehole wells. These wells are deep machine-drilled to depths of 200–900 feet or more, tapping confined aquifers to access clean and sustainable water even in the driest regions and in areas with high salinity or polluted surface sources. They are designed for vulnerable communities in arid and semi-arid regions, where safe water is scarce or unreliable. Each borehole can be connected to pipelines supplying water to approximately 1,000 households daily across large areas, ensuring continuous access to safe water, improving health outcomes, and strengthening long-term community resilience.
