The Struggles Refugees Endure

Jordan hosts over 1.3 million refugees, one of the highest ratios per capita in the world (UNHCR). Most are Syrians and Palestinians, but thousands also come from Iraq, Yemen, and Sudan. While Jordan has opened its doors generously, the weight on families and host communities is immense.

  • Poverty and debt: Nearly two-thirds of Syrian refugees live below the poverty line (ACAPS). More than 90% of families are forced to rely on negative coping strategies such as skipping meals, child labor, or unsafe work (UNHCR Data). Household debt averages JD 450, pushing families further into crisis (Fafo).
  • Food insecurity: Over 53% of refugee households are food insecure (ACAPS). Parents often eat less so their children can have something on their plates.
  • Education at risk: Refugee children face overcrowded schools, high transport costs, and systemic barriers. Thousands are unable to stay enrolled, and many youth drop out entirely to work (UNESCO, GAGE/ODI).
  • Healthcare collapsing: Recent cuts in humanitarian funding threaten services for tens of thousands. Over 43,000 refugees may lose access to health care, while maternal health services for 335,000 women are at risk (Anera). In camps like Jerash, 73% of women report depression and 60% report anxiety (The Guardian).
  • Shelter and winter hardship: More than 80% of refugees live outside formal camps, often in overcrowded urban housing or makeshift shelters (ACAPS). During harsh winters, families face impossible choices between food and warmth (ReliefWeb).

Our Response

HDF works across Jordan to restore dignity and stability for displaced families:

  • School Caravans: Portable classrooms provide safe, fully equipped spaces where children can learn and heal.
  • Emergency Shelter & Winter Kits: Durable tents, heaters, blankets, and warm clothing protect families through the cold season.
  • Healthcare & Surgeries: Mobile medical clinics bring services directly into camps, while cataract surgeries and disability care restore health and independence.
  • Orphan Sponsorship: Covering food, healthcare, clothing, and education for Syrian and Palestinian children who have lost their parents.
  • Food Security: Qurbani meat, Ramadan food baskets, and regular distributions ensure families do not go hungry.

What We’ve Done So Far
