Millions At Risk As Winter Grips Pakistan

Pakistan is facing a series of crises: Harsh winters, widespread poverty, and inadequate infrastructure continue to threaten the lives of millions. In regions like Balochistan, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, freezing temperatures are a life-threatening challenge for families living in poorly insulated homes or makeshift shelters.

Many of these families lack access to proper bedding, clothing, or heating, leaving them vulnerable to the cold. At the same time, contaminated water, malnutrition, and poverty are perpetuating cycles of hardship, especially for children, who face the harsh realities of child labor and limited access to education.

Situation On The Ground

Winter Hardships: Freezing temperatures during the winter months are pushing vulnerable families to the brink. Poorly insulated homes and temporary shelters offer little protection from the cold, leaving families without the resources to stay warm and safe.

Health and Nutrition Crisis: Contaminated water and food insecurity are putting millions at risk, with malnutrition taking a particularly devastating toll on children. Many are unable to access the nourishment they need to survive and thrive.

Child Labor and Poverty: An estimated 3.3 million children in Pakistan are trapped in child labor, depriving them of their education and health while locking them into a cycle of poverty and despair. These children represent a generation struggling to overcome systemic challenges without adequate support.

Lack of Resources: Families in affected regions are struggling to meet basic needs, from access to clean drinking water to proper clothing and bedding to survive the winter. Without intervention, the challenges they face are only set to worsen.

Afghanistan Standard Hand Pump Well
Our standard water wells are drilled up to 35 meters deep to serve 10 to 15 households daily, benefiting 100 to 200 people. Strategically placed in central village locations—often near schools or masjids—these wells provide easy access for multiple families. Built in communities lacking reliable clean water, they often represent the first time families have consistent access to safe drinking water for drinking, cooking, bathing, wudu, and other daily needs. Each well includes a hand pump, filtration system, and concrete platform with finishing work. Located mainly in Nangarhar and nearby areas.

Pakistan Solar Water Well
Under HDF's WASH initiative, a larger version of the solar water system is specifically designed for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with higher water pumping and storage capacity. This advanced system ensures an uninterrupted and sufficient supply of clean water for larger communities. Depending on the geographical conditions of the area, we use either a boring system or a dug well for water extraction. The flexibility of this approach makes it highly effective in addressing the unique challenges of KPK's diverse terrain. This approach ensures uninterrupted water supply through renewable energy with a depth of 200-300 ft.
