HDF’s Sudan relief in Kassala delivered food baskets, winter blankets, clean water, tents and health support to displaced families in late 2024. The Human Development Fund (HDF) recorded work at shelter centers including Umm Roman Model School, Al-Fayhaa School and Al-Taka Girls’ Secondary School.
Behind each count was a practical need. Families needed food they could prepare, something warm for the colder nights, water at the shelters and cover from the elements. The response met some of those immediate needs while conflict and displacement continued around them.
Sudan relief in Kassala began with food
HDF’s December 2024 campaign summary records 150 food baskets distributed across the three shelter centers. The baskets included staples such as flour, rice, cooking oil and lentils.

Food baskets could help households prepare more than one meal and use the ingredients according to their needs. They did not resolve the wider food insecurity facing displaced families, but they provided useful support at a difficult time.
635 blankets and 230 tents
At Umm Roman Model School, HDF reported distributing 635 blankets. The campaign record lists:
- 375 blankets weighing 5 kilograms each
- 260 blankets weighing 3 kilograms each
HDF also recorded providing 230 tents for 230 displaced families in Kassala. The tents offered temporary cover and greater privacy. They should not be mistaken for permanent homes or a complete solution to prolonged displacement.

Clean water and health support
HDF reported delivering clean water by truck to shelters in Kassala. Each truckload held 5 cubic meters of water. The original account does not state the number of truckloads delivered.
The response also included emergency health kits, immunization and nutritional support for children. The article did not record how many kits were distributed or how many children received those services, so the support should not be presented as a measured health outcome without further records.
What the Kassala response provided
HDF’s December 2024 summary records:
- 150 food baskets across three shelter centers
- 635 winter blankets at Umm Roman Model School
- 230 tents for displaced families
- Clean water delivered by truck to Kassala shelters
- Emergency health kits, immunization and nutritional support
These figures describe immediate assistance, not the end of a crisis. Food, water, blankets and shelter can reduce pressure on a family for a time. Continuing needs require continuing support, careful reporting and work led by the priorities of affected communities.
