At Tranquility Education Center in Korogocho, a classroom held more than one purpose on September 12. Clinicians sat at consultation desks, seeing children one at a time and recording information that could guide follow-up. Later, classrooms became dining spaces as 100 children received hot meals with fruit, juice and snack packs.
The sequence showed what orphan care in Korogocho can look like when education, health and nutrition are treated as connected parts of a child’s life. It was one part of Human Development Fund’s (HDF) September 2026 leadership visit to programs in Kenya.
Beginning with where children learn
The day began at Al-Tawoon Primary School. HDF’s Orphan Care Program Lead guided the visiting delegation through the school and the surrounding community, introduced them to school leaders, and explained how children in the program receive educational assistance.
For HDF leadership, the visit provided a closer view of the classrooms where children learn and the context in which the local team works. It also created space to hear directly from the staff responsible for staying connected with children and families beyond a single activity.
Health followed over time
At Tranquility Education Center, the delegation observed a scheduled quarterly health screening and treatment session. Clinicians met with each child individually. The session included temperature and oxygen saturation checks, weight measurement, and eye and throat examinations.

The screening was designed as part of continued child-health monitoring, not a one-time check. Program staff recorded findings for each child and arranged referrals or follow-up where needed. The report protects the children’s privacy by excluding individual health information and clinical findings.
A hot meal shared in the classroom
Alongside the screening, HDF served hot meals to 100 children enrolled in the Orphan Care Program at Tranquility Education Center. HDF staff and members of the visiting team prepared the meals on site, then served them in classrooms with fruit, juice and snack packs.

HDF CEO Shaykh Abdirahman Kariye joined the local team in serving children at their desks. Members of the delegation also sat with the children during the meal. Away from the formal program discussions, it was a chance to share time with the children whose daily routines the program is built around.
Three areas of care around each child
Across the two education centers, the delegation saw three parts of the same program. Educational assistance helps children remain connected to school. Quarterly screenings create a routine for identifying health concerns and arranging follow-up. Nutrition assistance helps meet an immediate need while reinforcing the wider commitment to each child’s well-being.
The visit was a leadership oversight mission, not a formal evaluation. Its value came from seeing how the program operates in practice and listening to the local team responsible for delivering it throughout the year.
