On September 23, 2024, families across Lebanon experienced one of the deadliest days of violence the country had seen in years. Human Development Fund (HDF) launched its Lebanon emergency relief response as casualties rose and displacement spread.
The World Health Organization, citing Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health, later reported that airstrikes that day killed 558 people, including 50 children and 94 women, and injured 1,835 others. These figures record a specific moment in September 2024 and should not be read as current totals.
Thousands of families were suddenly trying to find safety while hospitals faced an influx of wounded patients. The need was immediate: food, clean water, hygiene supplies, medical support and shelter.
What Lebanon emergency relief was built to provide
At launch, HDF’s response was designed to provide:
- Food aid for families facing hunger
- Clean water and hygiene kits
- Medical supplies for people wounded in the violence
- Emergency shelter for families forced from their homes
These are practical forms of support. Food helps a family through the coming days. Clean water and hygiene supplies protect health. Medical supplies help overstretched facilities care for wounded patients, while shelter gives displaced families somewhere safer to stay.
